Bachem reports record results on 2006 sales and profit. The Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) today announced results for the business year 2006. The company achieved a new sales record in 2006 with CHF 171.8 million. Net sales growth was 12.0% in local currencies and 11.8% in CHF compared with 2005. Operating income grew overproportionately by 18.2% to CHF 55.8 million and also net income showed a correspondingly positive development, increasing 18.5% to CHF 46.6 million. Thus, EBIT-margin increased from 30.7% to 32.5% and net income margin from 25.6% to 27.2%.

Bachem Completes Expansion of Peptide Manufacturing Capacities in the US. The Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) announced today that it has opened its new production unit at its US subsidiary Bachem California Inc. in Torrance, California. The expansion offers a forty percent increase in production capacity at the current facility for peptide-based active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to meet increasing market demand in North America. Bachem Group with new production unit for cytotoxic substances. The Bachem Group announced today that, at the end of 2005, its subsidiary Sochinaz SA completed the construction of a new production unit at its site in Vionnaz, Switzerland, for the manufacture of cytotoxic and cytostatic substances. These substances are used as active ingredients for cancer therapy and have to be manufactured according to the strictest safety requirements for both staff and the environment. The investments for the plant, which is licensed for production according to Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) principles, amounted to CHF 4 million.

Bachem AG today announced the conclusion of a long-term agreement with Debio, a Swiss drug development company, for the supply of triptorelin pamoate. Unter the terms of this agreement, Bachem will supply Debio with the active substance for its product Decapeptyl® (Trelstar® in the USA). Triptorelin pamoate is a peptidic active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), which is used for treating prostate cancer, endometriosis and premature puberty.

Bachem 2005 - Strong second half drives record sales. The Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) recorded its highest sales ever in 2005, totaling CHF 153.7 million. This represents an increase of 3.9% in CHF and 3.4% in local currencies over the previous year. The 2005 success was driven by the positive business trend during the second half of the year, with the fourth quarter proving to be particularly strong. In line with expectations, sales significantly increased during the second half of 2005 by 14.1% in CHF and by 12.1% in local currencies as compared to the corresponding period of 2004. In comparison to the first six months of 2005, sales increased by 17.8% in CHF and 14.1% in local currencies, respectively.

Bachem's new technical note Solubilization of Peptides is now available.
The solubility of a peptide is primarily dependent on the physical properties of its amino acids. Amino acids can be classified as acidic, basic, polar uncharged, or nonpolar hydrophobic. Peptides with a high content of nonpolar hydrophobic amino acids or polar uncharged amino acids are preferentially solubilized in organic solvents whereas overall acidic peptides can normally be reconstituted in basic solvents and overall basic peptides in acidic solvents.

Fertirelin acetate is a synthetic nonapeptide analog of the naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). Conversion of a DCHA salt to the free acid.
Bachem offers a number of N-protected amino acids as DCHA (dicyclohexylammonium) salts. The production of such salts is preferred if the free amino acid is not available in a crystalline form or if the free acid is unstable. In addition, in some cases DCHA salts of derivatives can be purified in a straight-forward process. However, before starting peptide synthesis, the amino acids have first to be liberated from their DCHA salts.

Full Year Sales 2004: Active pharmaecutical ingredients drive growth. Generics sales boosting by 22.5% in local currencies. The Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) today announced its 2004 sales results. In local markets, the company achieved sales growth of 4.7%. This is at the upper limit of the guidance communicated previously. Because ot the significant negative currency impact, due to the weakening of the US dollar by 7.6% as compared to 2003, sales in Swiss francs only slightly increased from CHF 144.6 million to CHF 147.4 million (+1.9%), despite the strengthening of the Euro and British pound vis-à-vis the Swiss franc.

Bachem offers a new product monograph on Secretase Inhibitors and Substrates. The deposition of amyloid b-peptide (Ab) in the brain represents a neuropathological feature of Alzheimer's disease. Ab is cleaved from its precursor protein (APP) by processing at the amino- and carboxy-termini by enzymes known as b- and g-secretases, respectively. Inhibition of amyloid peptide production by inhibitors of b- and g-secretases has been suggested as the most specific therapeutic approach.

Bachem half-year sales 2004 exceed CHF 75 million. In the first half of 2004, the Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) recorded sales growth of 8.0% in local currencies. Business dynamics in the USA and in peptide generics worldwide were primary contributors to this development. The appreciation of the Euro against the Swiss franc could not compensate for a further weakening of the USD by 6.3%, therefore sales increase in CHF was at 6.1%, resulting in a consolidated turnover of CHF 75.5 million as compared to CHF 71.2 million in the corresponding period in 2003.

Pevion Biotech announces positive results in clinical phase I trial for its malaria vaccine. Pevion Biotech, a joint venture of Berna Biotech AG and Bachem AG, reported today that it has met the clinical endpoints of its phase I trial for two components of the PeviPROTM based synthetic malaria vaccine PEV3A. Phase I, which represents the first stage of human testing for a potential vaccine, started in November 2003 and was designed to evaluate safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate in healthy volunteers.

The Bachem Group (SWX: BANB) today announced results for the business year 2003. Total sales in local markets grew by 1.8%. In face of the strong negative currency impact of the weakened US dollar, sales in Swiss francs diminished by 3.5%. Nevertheless, it was possible to increase EBIT by 0.3% from CHF 48.3 million to CHF 48.4 million, which resulted in an improvement of EBIT margin from 32.2% to 33.5%. Net profit increased by 11.4%, from CHF 33.5 million to CHF 37.3 million.

Jerini AG and Bachem AG today announced a collaboration agreement for production and supply of Jerini's lead compound Icatibant. At present, Icatibant is tested in several clinical trials to treat refractory ascites in liver cirrhosis as well as hereditary angioedema. By 2006 Jerini plan to bring Icatibant to market. Under the terms of the agreement, Bachem will supply Jerini with cGMP-produced Icatibant for clinical trials. Bachem will assume the entire process validation including necessary documentation for the registration process. First approval for Icatibant in the indication angioedema is targeted for 2006.

Full Year Sales 2003: Bachem reports continued sales growth for its active pharmaceutical ingredients business. The Bachem Group today published its 2003 sales results. In local markets the company achieved sales growth of 1.9%. The significant negative currency impact due to the weakened US dollar - by 14% as compared to 2002 - together with diminished demand for research chemicals resulted in a 3.4% decrease of total sales in Swiss francs from CHF 149.9 million to CHF 144.8 million.
