Active Substance
Secretin is produced by the S cells of the duodenum. The peptide hormone regulates the pH in the duodenal system, as secretin stimulates the secretion of bicarbonate by the pancreas and inhibits the gastric acid and gastrin production in the stomach. Additionally, secretin potentiates the release of digestive enzymes from the pancreas triggered by cholecystokinin.
Secretin also plays a role in the regulation of body water homeostasis.
