Key contributor to the healthcare industry: We make an important contribution to society by working daily to help our customers achieving breakthrough medical advances that transform patients’ lives. As a partner to pharma- and biotechnology companies worldwide, Bachem is an essential part of the global supply chain of medicines. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bachem increased manufacturing of Propofol, a small molecule API frequently used as an anaesthetic in the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Bachem also contributed peptides for diagnostic material to detect Covid-19.
CSR Management: Bachem operates a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) management system based on the relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and our Code of Conduct. We have maintained our commitment to the chemical industry’s voluntary Responsible Care® program for more than two decades to achieve excellence in sustainability and we continuously improve our manufacturing processes following the principles of Green Chemistry.
CSR Targets: As part of its CSR approach, Bachem has committed to making measurable improvements in four key areas:
- Energy Consumption: Reduce in energy consumption per FTE by 20% by 2026
- Occupational Health & Safety: Reduce Lost Time Incident Rate to ≤ 1.0 by 2026
- Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Halve GHG emissions per FTE by 2026 and achieve climate neutrality by 2030
- Diversity and Equal Opportunity: Increase proportion of women in workforce & management by 10% by 2026 and reflect the local communities we are part of in Bachem’s workforce
EcoVadis rating: In 2022 the Bachem group has been awarded a gold medal rating for sustainability by EcoVadis, putting it among the 5% most sustainable companies assessed by EcoVadis and among the top 2% of companies in the pharmaceutical supplier sector. Bachem was already recognized by EcoVadis in 2021, at that time with a silver rating. The rating recognizes the company’s performance in areas such as the environment, sustainable procurement, and labor and human rights.

This initiative, the only one of its kind in the world, drives continual improvement in the health, safety and environmental performance of chemical companies with global operations, often going well beyond legal requirements. In order to further improve its performance as an attractive employer, safeguard the environment, act ethically and guarantee the highest quality of products and services, Bachem implemented a CSR Management System in 2020.
Initiated by an in-depth materiality analysis conducted in 2019, involving key stakeholders, and an alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) most relevant to its business, the CSR Management System will lead the way for an improved sustainability performance.

Bachem’s performance is predicated on the very high educational achievements of the Workforce at every level. In addition to the professional qualifications acquired through a vocational apprenticeship or university degree programs, the Company attaches great importance to providing employees with training and continuing education. The safety of employees and the surrounding communities is consequently of fundamental interest to the Company. This includes a sound management of chemicals, reducing their release to air, water and soil as well as the reduction of waste generated.
